ASK: Go beyond “What’s the matter?” Ask open-ended questions like:
“What matters to you today?”
“What’s most important for you to get out of this today, [this visit/stay]?”
“What can I do to help you feel comfortable/safe?”
LISTEN: Truly hear the answer. Pay attention to verbal and non-verbal cues. Understand the meaning behind the words.
DO: Act on what you hear. This doesn’t always mean grand gestures! Often, it’s the small things that count.
